Does MAME (or something like Hyperspin) work in native OSX? If the answer is no to above, can I run it in a Windows VM (without lag)? If no to all the above,.

Can you remember the days with the Arcade games at the mall or the shops?

You would, if you grew up during the 80s-90s era.

Well, there was Atari and Nintendo. But the real fun was always at the Arcade shops.

Earlier this week, I have realized how much I have missed those games, nearly 25 years later.

So I dug out the emulator software for mac and the process to put those games back in my Macbook Pro.

It is fairly simple, just follow the steps below and you will be crushing the keyboard in no time filled with joy. You will definitely rewind back to 90s.

So what is MAME?

Technical abbreviation of M.A.M.E = Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator

M.A.M.E. as an archive of the retro software that runs arcade systems from the 80s and 90s. The developers tried their best to make the software systems that ran/run on arcade based computer's emulation. If you want to run some older arcade games, aside from having an authentic arcade machine, your best option would be the M.A.M.E. project.

Step 1

Get the OpenEmu software for mac. With OpenEmu, it is extremely easy to add, browse, organize and with a compatible game pad, play those favorite games (ROMs) you already own.

Make sure you download the Experimentalversion

Note: Here are the special instructions for mac, because usually macOS blocks 3rd party applications. Benq monitor sound driver.

Note: What are the ROM?- ROMs are the files for the games, each game has one or more ROM files in their '.zip' package.

Step 2

Extract the OpenEmu zip file in a folder of your choosing. See example below

Now, Right click and open the OpenEmu app. The system will show you a warning, in that dialog, choose 'Open'.

I've found that in order for me to send encrypted messages from Outlook, either A) I need to import the person into my Contacts and make sure their public key encryption cert is there or B) make sure the person has published their public key cert to the GAL (Global Address List) so it's picked up automatically. I was using the same cert on both accounts though so I'm not sure if that's part of it.The person my coworker is trying to encrypt messages to does not want to be bothered so I don't want to have him try sending a signed message first in the hopes that it allows encryption later without knowing for sure.Any assistance? It's on Outlook 2013 on Office 365. Ahhh CACs, love it. Outlook for mac the message could not be sent because it has unresolved recipients.

Step 3

Once it is open, you should see the screens with the downloadable options.

Now select all the options, if they are not already selected. This will download all the necessary modules for the application.

Once all the downloads are done, you will see an empty screen of OpenEmu (Shown in Step 1).

Step 4

At this step you can configure your controls. There is a variety of options to choose from. Go to Menu, OpenEmu > Preferences

Select your desired control settings from here.

Step 5

Now you can start installing the games in this OpenEmu library.

  • Go to Finder / Downloads - where you have the game ROM zip files
  • Drag them to the main window of OpenEmu
  • This will install the selected games and organize it like a library

Voila! There is no longer a need for a time machine to go back to your childhood memories.

How to play MAME arcade games in Windows PC?

I've written in the past about emulation and OpenEmu, a multi-console emulator front end that uses multiple emulation cores to provide a unified experience to macOS (OS X) emulation.

OpenEmu also sports MAME Arcade emulation support but its a bit tucked away.

Step 1: Download OpenEmu Experimental

Go to openemu.org and click the swatch and download OpenEmu Experimental, and install it.

Step 2: Install the MAME core

Once installed launch OpenEmu, open preferences and select cores. Click the install button next to MAME.

Step 3: Install games

Games can be nabbed from the usual suspects like emuparadise, the legality of this is fairly grey. OpenEmu only supports zipped roms so if the rom comes in a .gz or .rar, be sure to decompress its contents and rezip it. Name it the exact name as before (but with the new extension of zip). OpenEmu's mame core is version 0.149.1 so its significantly behind the windows version (from 2013 to be exact). Some sites will list the earliest known support needed for the rom in question.

Notably, you'll want access to the dipswitches, hitting F2 repeatedly while the game is launching will take you to most ROM bios screens that enable modes like free play. Note, I had issues resuming games and had to force quit MAME resuming so you may want to hold off resuming games.

Optional: NeoGeo Emulation

Emulating NeoGeo games requires one extra step, you'll need to get the NeoGeo rom, the one I used is from emuparadise (just go there and search for Neo Geo Bios) or try a popular search engine. Drag the Neo Geo zip into OpenEmu. You'll see the NeoGeo rom in your game list but ignore it and double-click the games as you normally would.

Good luck with OpenEmu.
