I have never gotten my Radeon 9200 Mac Edition PCI card to successfully play video files that aren't hardware accelerated. (G4 500MHz, 1.25GB ram).
In other words, DVDs play fine but things like mp4, DivX and XviD and those kinds of formats will crash the entire system after a few minutes of playing. Even if I lower the display resolution first.
What happens is that everything freezes on a video frame while the sound (usually) continues in the background. It has to be the graphics card because when I switch to my old Rage128Pro, everything plays fine.
The Rage card cannot however drive my large new display at 1900x1200. Well, it can but things like screensavers won't work at that resolution. Also, display resolution needs to be lowered every time I wish to play a DVD. If not it plays all jagged.
I have the latest ATI drivers (December 2004!!!) and I have reformatted and reinstalled the system (10.4.11) and QuickTime. Everything should be as clean as can be. I have also tried various media players, such as Chroma and VLC.
What I want to know is if this could possibly be solved by overclocking or maybe underclocking the graphics card. Or just any suggestions as to what a crash like this could be caused by would be most welcome. Thanks!

Thomas trainz mac. In an attempt to fit an ATi Radeon 9200 PCI for Mac into a beige G3 minitower running Mac OS 9.2.2, it was quickly discovered that the January 2005 ATI OS9 Radeon Update drivers are deficient, in spite of explicitly mentioning the card.

Clues on the almighty internet suggested that the DVI-I versions of the Radeon 9200 need a different set of drivers. Unfortunately, the archive link was broken.

Searching the filename turned an archive of the same name, and apparently related contents.

Manual installation of the files rendered a slow, but workable boot with the 9200. A lot of additional digging failed to produce an ATi control panel that works properly with this card, in this system.
